8 Mother Son Date Ideas in Toledo

“Life begins at the end of your comfort zone”, I said…. “Live every day to the fullest”, I said….and the stupidest thing I said, “We can do anything you want!”!! And that is precisely how I found myself in this precarious predicament, weak in the knees, adrenaline rushing, hands trembling, trying desperately to focus on the gentleman in front of me providing instruction on how to load a handgun. All I kept thinking was, this is more of a Father Son adventure, I shouldn’t be here…we shouldn’t be here.   Then I thought about the pioneer women, feminist, feminism, the females who serve and protect, all the strides we have made as women and I stepped outside my comfort zone, loaded, and fired that handgun.  And just like that calm came over me, having respect and a better understanding, gaining knowledge conquered fear. We learned valuable lessons, 1- how to handle a handgun, where the safety is, when it is on, off, how to load, and remove a magazine, the power, and the responsibility of the hands holding the handgun. 2-Mom has a decent aim. 3- Replacing fear with knowledge is good.  I was officially swimming outside my comfort zone of frilly dresses, tea parties, & pedicures and embracing all things boy on this Mother Son Date Day.

Next stop on our adventures, Dragon Roost Coffee because what little boy can pass up anything with the word dragon in it and what mom could pass up coffee?

Little man grabbed a mocha and I a cappuccino…because what goes better with pure adrenaline than caffeine!? Then we were on our way to conquer the last 3 items on his list. Get a picture with a Camaro, spend his Dick’s gift card, and eat a huge burger…and I am happy to say that I successfully fulfilled all 3 wishes, the Fairy Godmother couldn’t have done a better job! lol!

Well, almost, the burger was a veggie burger, the spell was wearing off and the mom in me was slowly reemerging…but it was colossal!

I slept like a baby that night…channeling the boy brain for a day is thrilling, a bit dangerous, and totally exhausting!!

Why Mother Son Dates?

A close mother-son relationship is good for a boy’s mental health. A study presented at the American Psychological Association showed that boys who are close to their mothers tend not to buy into hyper-masculine stereotypes. They don’t believe, for instance, that you have to always act tough, go it alone or fight to prove your manhood every time you are challenged. These boys remained more emotionally open. Not only did they have better friendships, but also less anxiety and depression than their more macho peers.

-Teenage boys who are close to their moms engage in less risky behavior. It has long been known that good parent-teen communication can help lessen the influence of negative peer pressure. But new research shows that it is a boy’s mother who is the most influential when it comes to her son’s decision making about alcohol, drugs and sex. Some researchers speculate that the nature of mother-son communication accounts for the difference: mothers usually don’t have one big “drug talk” or “sex talk” but instead tend to weave the topic into other conversations or family activities.

Far from making boys weaker, the love of a mother can and does actually make boys stronger, emotionally and psychologically. Far from making boys dependent, the base of safety a loving mother can create—a connection that her son can rely on all his life—provides a boy with the courage to explore the outside world. But most important, far from making a boy act in ‘girl-like’ ways, a loving mother actually plays an integral role in helping a boy develop his masculinity.
