There is a lot of preparation that goes into moving; from planning your relocation to boxing everything up, with so many different things to do it’s easy to forget to look into moving companies in Ottawa to help. But, when moving day arrives the moving company will be ready to load everything and get you into your new home. To get your move off on the right foot, it’s important to make sure that you are fully prepared ahead of time. Do not wait until the movers arrive to remember things, such as having a crate ready for pets. Here are some tips to help you prepare for moving day and help you have a smooth, effortless move.

Packing Your Belongings
Moving companies typically prefer to get in, load everything up and get on the road, so unless you have hired the moving company to also do your packing, it makes things go much smoother if you have your belongings packed and ready to go before the movers arrive. Make sure you have enough boxes and the right size boxes as well as the packing supplies you’ll need, such as bubble wrap or newspaper. Be sure to have boxes that large items, such as mirrors, televisions, and artwork will fit in. The better your items are packed, the less likely there will be an accident involving something getting broken. After your belongings are packed, be sure to label each box including what is in the box and which room it belongs in. This will make it easier for both you and the movers once your items are delivered to your new home.

Parking the Moving Truck
Letting moving companies know where to park the moving truck is one of the most commonly overlooked details for moving day. This is especially important if you are moving to or from an apartment complex or if the street is narrow at your current residence or the new residence. If the movers must park on the street, make sure you let your neighbors know that they will be parked there and may block the street for a short time. If you have a driveway and the moving truck will use the driveway, make sure you move your vehicle and leave the moving truck plenty of room to get and out of the driveway.

Plan for Pets and Small Children
If you have small children, consider asking a friend or family member to watch them on moving day. It will make it much easier, especially if the weather is bad. This will prevent you from having to take the children in and out of the house or worry about them getting underfoot of the movers. If you have pets before the movers arrive place pets in crates or in a room with the door shut. The last thing you want is for your pet to run out the door while items are being carried through the door. If you put pets in a room, make sure to let the movers know which room they are in to prevent the risk of the door being opened.
Moving companies are generally conscious about protecting your belongings and not tracking dirt and debris into your home. However, in some situations it difficult to completely avoid water, snow, or mud being tracked in, so be sure to protect your floors by laying down plastic or a tarp.
It really helped when you said to put pets in crates before the movers come. I need to move a lot of my furniture this weekend to my new house since I have big couches. I’ll be sure to find a moving company with competitive rates.
Pets definitely need extra TLC when moving and having their own crate w/a special toy or treat can really help comfort them…I’m so glad you found this post useful, Taylor. Thank you so much for taking the time to read and comment, I hope you have a smooth move this weekend. -Kat-
