When was the last time you experienced a deep belly laugh? I’m talking about one of those joyful, entirely immersed-in-the-moment, ugly faces, laughing. I’ll be honest, I haven’t experienced pure unadulterated fun like I had this past date night in a very very long time. I felt like a kid again, like I didn’t have a care in the world. It was therapeutic! You have to try it, your next date night has to be here!
Before I go any further I will address the elephant in the room, the resistance. What is said resistance? The excuses. The excuses as to why you can’t go on a date night. Top three in no particular order, time, money, and babysitter.
TIME
Make the time, schedule date nights, and follow through. Those days when you feel like you don’t want to be around your partner or spouse, are the days, moments, etc. when you need date nights the most! Setting aside quality time to spend together, and engaging in a novel experience is worth its wait in gold!
When engaging in a novel activity or experience together the neurotransmitter pathways you establish in your brain release dopamine and establish a memory, one that can be pulled up in the memory bank and the thoughts, feelings, and emotions associated with it can be relinquished repetitively over time.
MONEY
You set aside money to save for important things in your life, like your car, a house, children’s college fund, family vacation, etc. all of which encompass your future, you are investing in your future. I can’t think of a better investment in the future than your relationship. Without the relationship, there is no family, no family vacation, no family vehicle, etc.
BABYSITTER
If you do not have family in town or a neighborhood babysitter make a pact with another couple in one of your children’s classes, preferably one of your child’s or children’s friends, and take turns once a month or every two months watching one another’s children.
Now that we have the excuses out of the way let me tell you about the best date night I’ve had in a long time and why you need to book this date night as well! We went to Spin & Splat! I know what you’re thinking, isn’t that a place for kids? A quick answer, no! It’s for kids at heart. I mean when was the last time you splat paint on your partner/spouse? When was the last time you played the drums together? When was the last time you grabbed drumsticks and hit a drum filled with paint?
SPLATTING
I’m no couples therapist, but I will tell you that as half of a couple, in a committed relationship, this was therapeutic. Given the opportunity to relinquish all our adult responsibilities and obligations, to put on a poncho, goggles, booties, and just splash away on the canvas, on the wall, on each other was awesome. When else can a responsible, professional, at times even, sophisticated, adult be permitted to just let loose, not worry who’s watching, who’s judging, and just have pure unadulterated fun? But wait, it gets better! Not only did we get to splash one another with paint at unsuspecting moments, and splatter paint as we played the drums, but we also had the opportunity to spin! Now spinning is where mutual respect, communication, and collaboration come into play.

SPINNING
Spinning requires the couple to work together. After splatting and flirting with one another on shirts, canvas, drums, etc. now the couple needs to come together, agree, take turns, and communicate in unison. As a couple, you need to decide on the canvas, the colors, sprinkles, etc. We opted for the heart-shaped wooden canvas to keep and put out yearly as a Valentine’s Day decoration that will forever commemorate this date! An awesome spin canvas is currently hanging in my living room, and we have our “sample” pieces that I like and am thinking about framing.
We had the best time! We were able to act like kids again! We were able to act like kids together which we had never done before. This experience was ultimately priceless because it added a qualitative moment, experience, and event to our coupledom that will forever be cherished by both of us.
