Engagement rings have always drawn attention, though not always for the reasons people expect. For much of the twentieth century, the image of the classic diamond ring became so familiar that it almost felt like the only option. Then something interesting began to happen. A few well known figures started wearing engagement rings with striking red stones instead of the usual clear sparkle.
