Simple Ways To Reduce Your Carbon Footprint at Home

Are you interested in decreasing your carbon footprint? The number of greenhouse gases your home and family contribute to is measured as your carbon footprint. There are many different sources of these emissions, both directly from your home and personal activities and through the production of the goods and services your family uses. If you want to reduce the number of emissions your household produces, there are several simple ways to do it.

1. Choose Renewable Energy Sources

Many states now allow people to pick their energy suppliers. If you have this option, choose a provider that gets their energy from renewable sources. Whether it is by installing rooftop solar panels or purchasing power sold by a wind farm, Verde Energy Crunchbase suggests that using renewable energy is a small but noticeable way to decrease your carbon footprint. 

2. Improve Your Home’s Insulation

Do you enjoy keeping your home warm in the winter and cool in the summer? If so, it’s necessary to ensure your home is insulated properly to keep the outside air from seeping in. Check the insulation in the attic to see that it hasn’t degraded and needs replacing.  If you can feel a draft around any windows or doors, replace the weatherstripping and seal with caulking. Additionally, you can plant some beautiful, tall trees to provide natural shade to your home and bushes close to the foundation to help provide natural insulation from the weather.

3. Evaluate How You Use Your Home

While changing to renewable energy sources and improving your home’s energy efficiency are steps in the right direction, how you and your family use your home is vital to decreasing emissions. Daily habits such as shutting off the water when brushing your teeth and turning off the lights when not needed are common suggestions, but other changes are necessary to make a bigger impact. You can also:

  • Install LED light bulbs around your home
  • Use laptops instead of desktop computers
  • Unplug appliances that aren’t used daily
  • Heat or cool your home only when you’re in it
  • Turn down the water heater temperature
  • Keep your refrigerator and freezer at average temperatures
  • Hang clothes to dry outside when the days are sunny

4. Waste Less Food

Another behavior that impacts your carbon footprint is your eating habits. According to the New York Times, it’s estimated the people throw away up to 40% of the food they purchase. Not only is this a waste of money, but consider all the emissions created to develop this food. The growing and manufacturing, packing, transporting and selling the item all create carbon emissions. Then as the food rots in the landfill, it also adds methane to the atmosphere. To change this habit, consider making a menu and only buying the products you need, eating leftovers before cooking another meal and freezing what you don’t eat right away. 

Reducing your carbon footprint can be done by starting with small changes. Evaluate your home and how you and your family live in it to determine what changes can be made.
