This year hasn’t been easy for any of us. With kids back in school, at home or in the classroom, and the holidays fast approaching, that feeling of being overwhelmed hasn’t truly gone away. Never fear: fall is here! This is a great opportunity to spend some time outside, reconnect with family and friends, but most importantly reconnect with yourself. Whether you’ve been on a strict diet, buried in mountains of responsibilities, or just need some “me” time, go ahead and treat yourself. Need some ideas? Try these for starters.
Explore the City
So, you have an entire day to yourself and you’re looking to do something in your local area. You’d be surprised what you can find in your neighborhood. Here in Toledo, we have a ton of options to choose from to occupy your day. You could check out the Franklin Park Mall to see which of your favorite stores have reopened. If you’re not looking for a new outfit but rather an outdoor activity, you could always spend a relaxing afternoon in the park, and if you know Toledo, you know we have parks. Something more exciting in mind? Here’s a list of attractions including from the Toledo Zoo and local museums to boat rides on the Maumee River. If you have the time and are looking for more of a day trip, the Midwest has some great hidden gems to check out. Plan ahead, if you can, by doing a quick Google search of your surrounding areas. You might be surprised what you can find.
Plan a Self-Care Day
Sometimes we just need a self-care day and that is okay! Being on the go all the time can take its toll mentally and physically. Toledo has some great massage therapy clinics to work out those tense muscles. While there is nothing wrong with booking an appointment for a massage, opting to stay at home in your own space free of distractions can be very relaxing as well. If you’d rather stay in for your self-care day, consider trying some at-home spa treatments. Many of these are simple to do and you likely have the supplies at home. However, you can always use a mobile delivery service to order anything you don’t have at home. Whether it’s face masks and bath bombs or Funyons and a bottle of wine, all of your home essentials are available at the touch of a button. This will free up more of your time so you can spend the day soaking and cleansing the stress away.
Make Time for Hobbies
If you aren’t looking to travel too much on your “me” day but want to do something fun it might be time to take a look at some of your hobbies. Ready to pick up your old guitar again? Carve out some time to rekindle your interests. This is also the perfect opportunity to explore for something new that you find interesting. While fall time may not seem ideal for gardening, there are still some plants that you can plant in autumn. Lacking a green thumb? Try your hand at some other arts and crafts. According to this article from Psychology Today, you can relieve stress and problem-solve while working with your hands. Of course, not all of us are going to be making chairs in the garage or planting gardens. You could always do something a little more simple like testing out a new dinner recipe or a new cocktail. Check out this calendar for any upcoming city events.
Have a Date Night/ Ladies Night
Speaking of testing out a new dinner recipe, why not treat yourself, and your partner or friend to a date night? This will give you a chance to reconnect with them over a meal. Want to go the extra mile with your spouse? Try dinner by candlelight. It’s romantic, simple, and inexpensive. This intimate setting allows you to focus on each other and the delicious meal you have prepared. That being said, a night out could be exciting, too. Here are some of my adventures with other moms and wives on our ladies nights to give you some ideas. You could always have a date night for yourself, too. If the kids are at their grandparents or with a friend and you have the house to yourself, see what is streaming on your favorite service, pop your feet up and relax. You could pair this with any of your favorite movie time snacks, a glass of wine, or one of those cocktails you learned how to do during your day. Like I said, it’s okay to treat yourself once in a while. Have some ice cream; order those chicken wings. Today is all about you!
Whatever you decide to do on your day, make sure it is relaxing and beneficial for you. It’s okay to let go every once in a while, especially when you consider how hectic this year has been. So, the next time you plan a “me day,” don’t forget some of these ideas. You might be glad you did!
