Healthy Families, Healthy Kids Campaign FLASH GIVEAWAY!

It is that time of year again, time to say goodbye to the pool days and hello to school days! Which means it is time to get back into a routine. No more dinners at 9pm. Gone are the mornings for sleeping in (and wouldn’t ya know I just got my kiddos accustomed to the idea, only took practically all summer break, ha-ha). And time to start the school year off right, on a healthy note! Nutrition is important at home and in the classroom. Which is why I am excited to share that Produce for Kids is teaming up with Meijer stores for the second annual Healthy Families, Helping Kids campaign to raise money for local health and nutrition-based classroom projects through DonorsChoose.org. Last year, the campaign raised more than $169,000 and supported 652 classroom projects throughout the country.

Beginning Sept. 2 to Sept. 28, the joint campaign will help raise money for classroom projects that encourage healthy relationships with food. The more produce Meijer shoppers add to their shopping lists, the more hope they can give to local children. All participating fresh fruit and vegetable suppliers at Meijer stores will make a consumption-based donation DonorsChoose.org.

Parents, be on the lookout for Produce for Kids signage, featuring characters from the popular Sprout® television show, The Chica Show, in the produce section of your local Meijer store. There, you will find Ideal Meals recipes, tips and solutions to help you keep your family healthy for back-to-school and year-round.

I have to warn you, all the recipes are amazing! I let each of my kiddos pick out two to make with mom during our kids in the kitchen sessions together. Having your children help select the produce from the store, clean it, and prepare a meal really fosters the learning process.

3 out of 3 of my kiddos gave these recipe 5 stars (or moons, said the 3-year-old, lol!) thus; it only seems appropriate to share…..

Blueberry Banana Pancakes

Serves: 4

Preparation Time: 20 minutes

Ingredients:

½ cup all-purpose flour

½ cup whole wheat flour

1 tsp. baking powder

2 Tbsp. sugar

½ tsp. cinnamon

½ tsp. salt

1 cup fat free milk

3 Tbsp. canola oil

1 egg

1 banana, sliced

½ cup blueberries

2 tsp. caramel dip (optional)

1 Tbsp. pecans, finely chopped (optional)

Directions:

1.Sift flours, baking powder, sugar, cinnamon and salt in large bowl. Add milk, oil and egg, and mix until moistened.

2.Heat griddle or skillet over medium heat; spray with cooking spray. Spoon ¼ cup pancake mixture onto skillet. Add sliced bananas and blueberries, and cook 2-3 minutes, or until pancakes begin to bubble. Flip and cook 1-2 minutes, or until done.

3.Top with pecans and drizzle with caramel dip. (optional)

Pet vs. Pest (Insect Education Kit Giveaway)

If I were to say our 7 year old daughter likes insects that would be an understatement. Obsessed might be a better description of her interest.

Why, just the other day I was searching for a Pyrex dish to place leftovers in and came up empty-handed. Why? Well, apparently they make the perfect bug bungalow, who knew? She had those dishes piled 3 high with various bugs; pill bugs, worms, spider, crazy legs, etc. Please note, I do not share the same interest and have no idea what the actual names of these “bugs” are called. But since her interest doesn’t seem to be fading perhaps I should learn? (Image below is of her holding a stick bug)

Her interest in insects began at a young age. I can recall one incident in particular. She and I were in the bathroom, she must have been around 3, and we were brushing our teeth and out of nowhere “crazy legs” (again, I have no idea what they are actually called but they are big and they have WAY too many legs…all those legs, they creep me out!) went bolting across the floor. I let out a yelp and began my search for an object to kill the pest. But not my little princess, she clearly did not share my same detest for the “crazy legs”. Her eyes widened and her facial express said it all, she displayed awe and inspiration. She said, “awe mommy look he is so cute…a new pet”. No. No. NO! How was I supposed to put my fear to rest if this thing was still lurking in my house….but how do I break my little girl’s heart and kill her pet? Oh the quandaries of motherhood. On the plus side maybe they didn’t live long!?

Her interest has only intensified with age. Whenever we walk to the park her focus is more on the insects along the way as opposed to the destination. And when she arrives at her Nana’s house which has a big wooded backyard, she requests a Ziploc bag and heads right out the backdoor in search of insects. We even currently have a Mason jar specifically for Locus shells. And the cherry on this bug infestation fascination, her teacher this year once had a cockroach for 8 years. I know what most of you are thinking, eww right?! But I was so excited for my little entomologist. Since she is my love and I want to take an interest in what my loves love I am slowly appreciating the role insects play in our lives, slowly.

My relationship with Legos is a rocky one; I am not going to lie. Don’t get me wrong, I simply adore the fact that my children can spend hours creating cities, castles, cars, putting together kits, etc. with Legos. I admire watching those wheels turn in their little brains and the joy come over their little faces when they connect and build from their imagination and instruction. Then the children grew but the Legos got smaller and multiplied much faster. Now we have Mega, Duplo, Ninjago, etc. strategically planted throughout the house, where ever I could find storage. At this rate, eventually our home will become taken over by Legos! Help!

Movie nights are a family favorite in our household. It is nice to come together after a long week and relax, to turn off all phones and cozy up on the couch together, to watch the children’s eyes widen in awe and curiosity. Within minutes of signing up my kiddos and receiving the family pack I had an email with our coupons for the week! Talk about convenient! And moments later I was telling all my friends, including all our playgroup friends, and setting up dates to go bowling.

Here are pictures from our latest bowling trip. And yes, your toddler can bowl too! I had reservations about our 2-1/2-year-old bowling but they actually had bowling shoes (toddler and pre-K shoes are Velcro), an extremely light-weight ball (it is so light it bounces lol! She did drop it once and no one got hurt…it bounced), there is this contraption that helps roll the ball down the alley, and of course there are bumpers. Thus with all the nifty contraptions for the little ones to bowl my toddler totally scored higher than I, ha-ha!

We had so much fun I can’t wait to go back this week! Kids Bowl for Free is also a great way for dad to spend quality time with kiddos why mom gets a couple of hours to herself…hint-hint. Also a great way for parent/child to bond just the two of them….get a tween in a bowling alley and they will eventually start talking around the 7^th frame. Eco-friendly Cleaner (Giveaway)

As a mom on the go my time is very valuable. I do not have hours to devote to cleaning my home. That being stated we do entertain a lot, whether it is play dates, family gatherings, hubby and his friends watching a game, or me just hanging out with other moms. So our home does need to be clean. The toys need to be sanitized, hard surfaces need to be dusted (the cat and dog really contribute to this need), kitchen and bath need to be cleaned, you get the idea. With all these items needing to be cleaned on a regular basis buying in bulk would seem the most practical and cost-effective solution, right? Wrong! Our home was built in 1940 and therein lays the problem, no storage space! So where on earth would I store 12+ bottles and sprays? Not to mention, what would all those bottles do to my carbon footprint?

Um, hello! Could this be true? I was beyond ecstatic when I received an email asking if I was interested in reviewing Jaws just add water system! I replied to that email in a hot second with a definitive and bold, YES!

And let the fun begin…

Fun!? Cleaning is fun!? I know, I know…I am a self-proclaimed nerd, organizer (when time allows), cleaning enthusiast (when the DJ plays my tunes), and coffee junkie but that is beside the point. Thus, when it comes to cleaning, and I am sure most moms can agree, when you find something that makes your life easier you tend to get a little excited. Not a bull in a China shop excited but more along the lines of a kid in a candy store, (though the two seem similar it is the overall damage that distinguishes them).

So we grabbed the spray bottles and filled each to the fill lines with water and we twisted the cap till the cartridge opened and colorful happiness, as our toddler so eloquently stated, erupted. Then I went to town cleaning the house. I cleaned the soap scum and toothpaste residue in the bathroom, all glass and mirrored surfaces, hard surfaces, you name and I cleaned it!

The house looked amazing, so much so my hubby looked a little perplexed when he got home, like he had for gotten about a gathering we had later. I continued to use it for the remainder of the week in order to get a solid, honest, earnest review of the product. And my conclusion, after a week of reviewing Jaws cleaners is that they are amazing and deliver on all sides, they are eco-conscious, non-toxic, economical, and highly effective!

Sippy Grab KoalaLabels Review and Giveaway (vlog)

“Label it!” was a phrase that my brother, sister, and I heard often when we were growing up. Whether it was a cup, crayons, scissors, bathing suit, underwear, shoes, you name and our mother told us to label it. Which totally make sense coming from a woman who grew up in a family of 9, and 6 of those 9 were brothers, I would have labeled everything too! So when I came across the opportunity to review something with label in the name I simply couldn’t refuse. In fact, I found myself becoming all nostalgic.

My mind instantly went back to a fond childhood memory, planting flowers with my mom on a warm spring day. Sipping a cool refreshment from my awesome Tupperware Sippy cup. Then going to sit that Sippy cup on the ground only to find that the adhesive from previous labeling (masking tape with child’s name written in marker) was left behind and the cup was stuck to my hand along with some dirt and what appeared to be a few strands of my hair. Oh the memories.

Now that I am a mom I have a new-found appreciation for the good old labeling technique, in fact so much so that I actually have a little jingle I often sing to my children. Are you familiar with the song, ‘Put a Ring on it’ ? But in place of ring I state label. (I contemplated singing it for you in the vlog but I will not put you through that torture) It goes like this;

‘Cause if you liked it, then you should have put a label on it

If you liked it, then you shoulda put a label on it

Don’t be mad once you see that he want it

‘Cause if you liked it, then you shoulda put a label on it

Uhh, oh, uhh oh, oh, oh, oh

The funny thing is, in this day and age of iPads, Smart Phones, etc. the technique for labeling Sippy cups has not really evolved at all. I am still using the same technique my mom used which is why I was excited to have the opportunity to review the Sippy Grab KoalaLabels. So, were they a bust, or brilliant? Find out….
