Make-A-Wish 2019 NW Ohio BIG Wish® Gala…pass the tissues, please!

img_8536

As the old saying goes: We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.

Three big principles of any solid financial plan are to save, spend and give. Most people forget about the giving part, though, because they think mostly about saving and spending.

But giving is just as important. It softens the heart of the giver and frees their soul from dependence on money. You’ll never walk away from giving feeling bad! (Source)

Those wise words from the money guru himself, Dave Ramsey, resonate in my mind as I eagerly raid my closet for something to wear to the upcoming Make-A-Wish 2019 Toledo BIG Wish® Gala!

There are currently 25 children in northwest Ohio who are awaiting their wish.

For details on how to get engaged with our chapter, please visit http://www.oki.wish.org/ & follow on social media @makeawishohkyin.

Make-A-Wish® creates life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses. The organization is on a quest to bring every eligible child’s wish to life, because a wish is an integral part of a child’s treatment journey.

img_8536

Make-A-Wish Ohio, Kentucky, & Indiana (Make-A-Wish OKI) will celebrate the dozens of life-changing wishes granted last year in northwest Ohio, and the generous community who helped bring those wishes to life at the Northwest Ohio BIG Wish® Gala presented by Toledo Molding & Die, Inc. on Friday, April 12th at Renaissance Toledo Downtown Hotel.

img_8534

This year’s gala honors the 15th anniversary of wish kid Travis’ book, “The Spider Who Never Gave Up.” Make-A-Wish OKI granted Travis’ wish to write the inspirational children’s book in 2004. Since then, Travis, who battles Cystic Fibrosis, has donated and sold more than 10,000 copies!

“Make-A-Wish is the reason I became the person that I am today.

“After a lifetime of Cystic Fibrosis and two double-lung transplants, I have learned a lot about life and purpose,” said Travis. “Make-A-Wish is the reason I became the person that I am today. My purpose was to make sure Sparkey’s message reached people. Make-A-Wish fulfilled my purpose.”

Several wish kids will be honored during the program including wish kid Braylon. His parents will share about his wish experience to go to the Pro Bowl.

Make-A-Wish OKI Gala special guest and emcee is 13ABC’s Christina Williams!

Huge shout out to all the generous sponsors for this year’s gala including Toledo Molding & Die, Inc., Renaissance Toledo Downtown Hotel and Tito’s Handmade Vodka.

Frogtown Exotics Experience or a B-day gift?

Throw an epic b-day party or give an awesome gift? Hmmm, the decision can be a tough one! Especially when it comes to our kiddos! As parents is it smarter to throw our kiddos a party or use that money to go towards an awesome gift?  This was the dilemma the hubs & I were dealing with recently. So, like the nerd I am I did a little research. Here are my findings….

Experience vs. Material Good

The Thrill of Purchases Fades

Recent research from San Francisco State University found that people who spent money on experiences rather than material items were happier and felt the money was better spent. The thrill of purchasing things fades quickly but the joy and memories of experiences, from epic adventures to minute encounters, can last a lifetime. (Source, https://www.forbes.com/sites/ilyapozin/2016/03/03/the-secret-to-happiness-spend-money-on-experiences-not-things/#5272bec939a6 )

The Experience begins at Anticipation

While experiences are designed to be fleeting, they provide high level of arousal & memorability thanks to anticipation. Example, you hear your favorite artist is coming to town so you mark your calendar not only for the date of the show, but also when tickets go on sale. You’re anticipating purchasing tickets and then attending a show after you’ve secured your tickets. Going to this show is an entire experience, not just a singular moment!! (Source, https://www.entrepreneur.com/article/294163 )

The Experience Boosts our Happiness

A 2014 study by Thomas Gilovich, a psychology professor at Cornell University, found that experiential adventures — such as travel, a concert, or viewing exhibitions — were far more powerful in shaping our lives and boosting our happiness than any commercial, material goods. (Source, https://blog.mindvalley.com/experiences-make-us-happier/ )

Nah-uh…was my first “adult” thought upon reading all the studies, Lol! So I took it a step further and wracked my brain trying to remember what I received as my b-day gifts as a child at my McDonalds b-day party, at the awesome party my mom threw at home, or the 3 epic parties my mom threw at the Hilton (my b-day is in January…she got two rooms and I invited 6 friends to swim, a swim party in January, it was LIT!), nothing!  I legit have no idea what I received as gifts at any of my b-day parties…I can remember the parties like it was yesterday, not so much the gifts.

AN EPIC B-DAY PARTY IT IS!!!

img_8504

I’m so excited! Per the research I did our experience starts now at the anticipation phase!!! We have booked Frogtown Exotics for my son’s b-day party! He already can’t wait to hold the 2nd biggest species of frog in the world and feed it a 3” hissing cockroach!

The combination of their perfectly tuned integrated sound system and precise speaker orientation ensures you can hear a pin drop and be able to tell exactly where it landed. Every note of the soundtrack and every scuff of a shoe are clearer in IMAX, with a complete overhaul of each movie’s audio overseen by the film’s director. All of this pristine sound is then pumped into a theatre that has been customized for an optimal experience. Clarity, detail and size make IMAX more than a movie. Axe 419 Ladies Night Out

Two words! Worth it!! Moms, we all know we need some time away from the obligations and responsibilities of motherhood. We need to regroup, decompress, & remember that we’re more than nose & butt wipers. And yes, Karen, we know we need to put our oxygen masks on first! If I hear that analogy ONE MORE TIME!! Lol! But let’s be honest, going out is a LOT of work. First & foremost you need to snag a sitter, make dinner for kids, write bedtime instructions, sit everything out for the next day so you don’t hate yourself in the morning, & finally, make yourself look presentable…that might be a reach, put a bra on.  Going out can also cost a lot of money. We’re talking having to sacrifice your Grande Frappe Latte for a few weeks kinda money!  And, finally after all that work, all those days of pretending to enjoy your new coffee & ice cream concoction, losing a lifelong friendship because you stole her babysitter, & wearing an uncomfortable bra ALL night, you arrive home and go straight to the fridge to slurp up your sorrows in the butter pecan coffee carafe. Moms Night Out Remorse is a real thing, it’s like buyer’s remorse only worse because not only are you out the money, but also the time! That’s why I’m happy to announce that there is a Ladies Night Out destination that has been given the Mom on the go in Holy Toledo seal of approval, WORTH IT!! Read more

NOT ANYMORE! Brace yourself; this is a GAME CHANGER….SafeSplash +SwimLab Swim School Holland! Say What?!

Lenten Journey

“At this time, make sure your seat backs and tray tables are in their full upright position and that your seat belt is correctly fastened”….it’s Ash Wednesday, here we go!! Today is the official day of take-off, our Lenten journey begins today. Did you pack accordingly? Do you have your itinerary ready? What about shoes, did you pack the right shoes? You don’t want to get blisters! The truth of the matter is most of us are spending more time contemplating footwear for a mini-vacation than we do our entire 40 day Lenten journey. Why? Because, when that flight attendant rolls her cart on down the aisle we will just abstain from pop or alcohol and we’re good, done! Lent just means you give up something, right? If we think of Lent as a Journey and we just gave up drinking something on a journey, without any additional attention to details we wouldn’t get much further than the airport. Thus, what if we treated our Lenten journey with the same respect, time, & attention to detail that we would treat any other journey?

When you take a journey somewhere you need to:

1-Research and map out your journey

When you go on a trip you usually first determine the date of your journey, any special considerations that need to be made, and map out the days

  • Lent begins Wednesday March 6th and ends Thursday April 18th
  • Sundays are not included in the 40 days of Lent
  • Sundays we go to Church
  • Ash Wednesday & Fridays during Lent we abstain from meat

2- Make list of items you will need to pack

  • Prayer
  • Fasting
  • Almsgiving

3-Make your itinerary

  • Get out your calendar/planner and plan your 40 days of Lent

lent2

lent

CLICK HERE for Walk the Lenten Path Calendar

Once you’ve planned for your journey accordingly all that’s left is to make sure your seat backs and tray tables are in their full upright position & let the Holy Spirit take flight!

How does your itinerary look? What will you be adding to and/or abstaining from during your Lenten journey?
