Ziplining & Feeding Giraffes in Toledo

As if you needed an excuse to visit the #1 US Zoo based on USA Today’s Readers’ Choice, the Toledo Zoo! That catchy little tune you hear playing as you make your way across the bridge over the Anthony Wayne Trail is 100% correct, We Love Our Zoo! And now there is so much more to love! In addition to last year’s mind blowing openings of the Aquarium, Penguin Beach, & Splash pad this year the Toledo Zoo has done it again with Expedition Africa and Tower Ridge Giraffe experience. You can now add zip lining, an aerial adventure course, and feeding giraffes to your already awesome Zoo adventures (and here the kiddos thought it couldn’t get any better than Nature Neighborhood, the Touch Tanks in the Aquarium & the Splash Pad).

I opted for the Zip line as opposed to the Challenge Course due to time constraint (Challenge Course takes up to two hours while the Zip line only takes an hour). The zip line includes the awesome Sky Bridge and I was able to view the Challenge Course along the way which I am totally coming back to complete at a later date. And I decided to capture my journey via a GoPro Camera.ZOOFUN

Get this; they have GoPro Cameras available if you would like to document your experience. The GoPro Camera equipment is rented and secured to your helmet. After completing the course I was given a memory card with the footage on it. ($29.99 per participant for Zoo Members & $33.99 per participant for Non-Members)

I had an absolute blast! The Sky Bridge was tranquil, beautiful; I have never felt more one with the environment. At the end of the Sky Bridge I began my journey up the stairs to the Zip line tower, with each step my adrenaline increased, until I was at the top and totally weak in the knees. Then the moment I had been waiting for, gliding across the Africa exhibits was unlike anything I had ever experienced before, the wind beating against my face, the humming of the zip line, and this feeling of awe swept over me, I didn’t feel like I was in Toledo anymore. Checkout my journey……

The only problem with the Zip line is that once you have done it once you will want to do it again! I think this is a fabulous inclusion to the Zoo; it is nice that there is something for the older kiddos to do after they have graduated from the Splash Pad and Natures Neighborhood.

While I Zip lined my munchkin and her Nana road the train and carousel, both located in the Africa! Exhibit, then we met up in the Tower Ridge Giraffe Experience line to feed the Giraffes.

So,I kinda pride myself in being as transparent and honest as possible and I will be truthful in stating that at first, after paying our $4 for giraffe food, and waiting for what seemed like an eternity (which was probably more like 5 minutes, if that) for the giraffes to walk over I started to think that perhaps this experience wasn’t worth the money or time. memorial_africazoo2016 136

Then it happened, the Giraffes made their way over to us and my heart skipped a beat, they are such majestic, serene creatures, and so gentle. It was an amazing experience. Moral of the story, the experience was totally worth the money and time, just be patient (which can be extra hard on the young, hot, and/or cranky, lol!).

Thorn Park Splash Pad is located in Brownstown Michigan, roughly 40 minutes (with construction) from Toledo. It is literally a straight shot up I-75, super easy to find. It is like a little oasis of fun! Thorne park has a remarkable slash pad & sweet playground so be sure to pack a lunch because you are going to want to stay for a while.

 artichoke_splashpad 039BLOG

When planning your trip to the splash pad it is important to bear in mind that they offer 3 separate splash pad sessions, 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, 1:30 PM to 3:30PM and the last session is strictly for residents only 4:00PM to 6:00 PM. Admission is required; everyone who enters the splash pad must have a wristband. Admission/wristbands cost $2 per person, talk about a steal! It only cost me $8 for me and my kiddos to enjoy 2 hours of slashtastic fun!!

 artichoke_splashpad 044BLOG

The kiddos had an absolute blast! But let’s be honest, they are kids playing in water, they are going to have fun. The real question is how was the experience from a mom’s perspective? How vigilant do moms have to be? Is there a place for moms to sit? Are there locker rooms/changing area? Can you bring snacks/food? Is it clean? How are the people? Us moms have REAL questions & would appreciate REAL answers! Am I right!?!

 artichoke_splashpad 075BLOG

Thorne Park Splash Pad is extremely clean & accommodating to mothers! It is an entirely enclosed space, children cannot escape, no matter how hard they try. Haha! The gate is latched and needs to be opened by an adult.

artichoke_splashpad 033BLOG

They offer benches along the parameter of the pad as well as shaded, yes; I said shaded areas with tables and chairs. We placed our bags and towels down in the shaded areas since the splash pad wasn’t too crowded. They do have lockers available for your bags. The shaded areas do not get wet, only the blue areas get wet, I like how they define the splash zones, it is nice to know where you can take pics without the fear of being blasted with water.

 artichoke_splashpad 013BLOG

Moms can just relax in the shade and chat it up with other mommas like I did, while watching my kiddos enjoy themselves. I love the fact that whoever designed this splash pad really considered the parents perspective, it was nice not being an afterthought (there is nothing worse than having to squat down and sit on a curb with all your stuff, stressing out trying to locate your child in a crowd of kiddos, praying they didn’t escape or accidently get caught up in a field trip, all the while wish you would have gone pee when the kids did!)

 artichoke_splashpad 010BLOG

Food is allowed in the park just not in the splash area, which makes perfect sense. They have plenty of picnic tables across from the splash pad where you can enjoy lunch. We splashed for an hour, had lunch, and then went back for 40 minutes. 2 hours seems to be the perfect amount of time. To be honest, the kiddos were pretty much finished and ready to go, though it helps when they knew we were going to the playground afterward.

 artichoke_splashpad 103BLOG

They offer changing area and very clean restrooms. After kiddos changed we headed to the playground. Since the majority of the kiddos we were with were between 5 &12 we went to that playground but it should be noted that they also have a playground for the toddlers too.

 artichoke_splashpad 089BLOG

The playground looked like an extension of nature. It camouflaged with the surrounding trees. It offered quite an array of activities for the kiddos.

artichoke_splashpad 100BLOG

artichoke_splashpad 090BLOG

In addition to working out the various muscle groups through climbing, stretching, and balancing it also had them using senses on a scavenger hunt & and listening to various nature sounds. A panel listed all the items they needed to locate throughout the structure, it made for a fun game.
