Lenten Journey

“At this time, make sure your seat backs and tray tables are in their full upright position and that your seat belt is correctly fastened”….it’s Ash Wednesday, here we go!! Today is the official day of take-off, our Lenten journey begins today. Did you pack accordingly? Do you have your itinerary ready? What about shoes, did you pack the right shoes? You don’t want to get blisters! The truth of the matter is most of us are spending more time contemplating footwear for a mini-vacation than we do our entire 40 day Lenten journey. Why? Because, when that flight attendant rolls her cart on down the aisle we will just abstain from pop or alcohol and we’re good, done! Lent just means you give up something, right? If we think of Lent as a Journey and we just gave up drinking something on a journey, without any additional attention to details we wouldn’t get much further than the airport. Thus, what if we treated our Lenten journey with the same respect, time, & attention to detail that we would treat any other journey?

When you take a journey somewhere you need to:

1-Research and map out your journey

When you go on a trip you usually first determine the date of your journey, any special considerations that need to be made, and map out the days

  • Lent begins Wednesday March 6th and ends Thursday April 18th
  • Sundays are not included in the 40 days of Lent
  • Sundays we go to Church
  • Ash Wednesday & Fridays during Lent we abstain from meat

2- Make list of items you will need to pack

  • Prayer
  • Fasting
  • Almsgiving

3-Make your itinerary

  • Get out your calendar/planner and plan your 40 days of Lent

lent

CLICK HERE for Walk the Lenten Path Calendar

Once you’ve planned for your journey accordingly all that’s left is to make sure your seat backs and tray tables are in their full upright position & let the Holy Spirit take flight!

How does your itinerary look? What will you be adding to and/or abstaining from during your Lenten journey?

Infertility happens…and it sucks!

The “Infertility worksheet”, she handed it to us after eight months of trying and four months of charting. I sat for a few seconds staring at the boldness of each letter. It was official, it was written in ink, it was the stamp that sealed the deal- we had infertility issues. Well I guess we knew we did, after almost a year without success and then finally seeking professional help for fertility. Infertility can be a long and lonely journey filled with hopeless dreams and endless heartache. Read more

Time to REBOOT the Family Goals for 2019

Did you set Realistic Family Goals for 2019?

It’s easy to get overwhelmed by the mass popularity of resolution-setting at the start of each year. With everyone setting broad aspirations for themselves in all areas of their lives, it can be difficult to decide what areas of your own life should be your focus for positive growth and development. When these feelings of confusion and indecisiveness set in, it’s sometimes helpful to bring your attention to the thing that means the most to you in this world: your family. Making your family the central focus of your goals for the New Year can help you to decide what your priorities are and how, specifically, you want to improve life for yourself and for the people you care about most. I know we are two months into the New Year but it is never too last to set those goals….better yet, what if you set goals each month? March is just around the corner, let’s set the following goals for the first of March; and let’s officially REBOOT the Family Goals for 2019!!

hobbies

Pick Up a New Hobby Together

Have your kids expressed interest in playing a sport, taking dance lessons, or learning an instrument? Encourage their curiosity, and find a way to support them in starting their new activity! Take them to the park to kick around a soccer ball, or show them the basics of an instrument you might already know how to play.

Better yet, seek out new activities that you and your child can do for the first time together! Enroll in a community art class, or take an afternoon to learn how to go geocaching. Pursue opportunities that will help you both to learn a fun new skill while maximizing the amount of quality time you get to spend with each other.

Introduce the Kids to Something You Once Loved

What games did you love to play when you were growing up? What music did you listen to? Did you have any unusual (or decade-specific) hobbies or interests?

Give the kids a better sense of who you were as a child and what made you into the person you are today. Show them some of the things you loved when you were their age, and teach them something about the way the world used to be. Get them away from their screens for a while, and prove to them that fun can still be had while being present in the non-virtual world.

SMARTGoals

Plan a Mini-Vacation

Can’t swing a week-long trip to Disney this year? Take a weekend to go on a road trip instead! Whether it’s to a nearby lake, the next state over, or the town you grew up in, spending a couple of days of light travel with the kids can make for an incredible bonding opportunity. If you can manage it, make it a tech-free weekend for everyone so you can properly enjoy each other’s company. It doesn’t have to be anything extravagant or expensive– if the focus is placed on the time you’re spending together and the experiences you’re sharing, mini-vacations can be some of the most meaningful experiences of your children’s young lives.

Tackle Your Finances

Make this the year you take full control of your financial life. Spend some time learning how to properly budget your personal expenses. Treat deposits to your savings like a regularly scheduled bill payment, and get on a consistent schedule of building up your account. If your kids are at an age where they’re starting to be able to understand money, open up a candid dialogue with them about the family’s finances. If you’re still working on paying off college debt, explore the possibility of refinancing your student loans to lower the monthly cost. Get to work on your taxes well in advance to avoid due date stress. When you’re able to accurately keep track of where your money is going and how it’s being allocated, you’ll find that you’ll have a greater capacity for devoting your attention to the things that are most important to you.

Pursue New Experiences, Not New Items

It might be tempting to spend your extra cash on a cute date night outfit, new exercise equipment, or the latest XBox for the kids, but why not instead put that money toward making memories with the people you love? Material possessions are ultimately temporary, and while they might bring you happiness in the short term, they aren’t the things that will bring your life greater meaning. On the other hand, going to new places and trying out new activities with your family will bring you shared joy, renewed closeness, and broadened perspectives on the world that will last you a lifetime.

Happy March 2019! Let’s make it a great one!

Time with my Teenage Daughter: Abduction or a Coffee Date?

I met up with a friend for lunch the other day and she asked, “So, what’s it like having a teenager?”.  My response…honestly, some moments it amazing, others it’s like living in the twilight zones, and then there was this experience….

I felt like I was Hellen Keller on the witness stand being cross-examined by the prosecutor! I thought I was clearly vocalizing my words, expressing what I saw, & hearing what she was saying….but her rebuttal was, you’re not listening, that’s not even what happened, & AND YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND! How did we get here?! What happened to my daughter?! Let me backtrack.

So, it was Valentine’s Day morning and I was rushing my oldest to school per our usual, isn’t it exciting to see just how close we can cut it to school starting without being late routine. And moments before we left the house she broke down in tears. I asked, “What’s wrong” and she said, “Nothing”….and then we did that in rounds for a few minutes & got in the car. Finally, moments before rushing into school she told me she would tell me what was wrong later….fast forward to later, at home, in our kitchen. At this point I was sick of hearing myself ask the question, but I was genuinely concerned, so I went for it….she exclaimed that she didn’t want to tell me with her siblings all around and constantly eavesdropping. She has a valid point; they are like little spies just waiting to report back to headquarters, I mean mom/dad at the drop of any infraction. So I decided to remove her from the environment and then hopefully she’d talk.

It was finally happening, we were going to have one of those amazing mother/daughter bonding moments over coffee, like the Gilmore Girls! She would open up, spill everything, we’ll laugh, we’ll cry, and then get up at midnight to dance in the snow. Well, we did get in the car and headed for coffee, but it wasn’t exactly a Gilmore Girls kinda moment, more of an Unsolved Mysteries child abduction moment, you could practically hear Robert Stack narrating as I drove……”what started off as a warm, welcoming mother/daughter moment took a turn for the worst when her mother abducted her claiming they were just going for coffee!”.

She starred at me like any abducted child would, or at least what I would assume an abducted child would look like, this was my first time. She inquired, “why are you doing this?!”, as she put her headphones on. Did she suddenly catch amnesia somewhere between the front door and the car? “Um, hello, we are going to grab coffee and talk somewhere where the little spies, I mean your siblings, aren’t around, remember?” Radio silence….headphones?!  TAKE OFF THE HEADPHONES!! “Monica’s mom let’s her wear her headphones in the car”. “And I’m sure Monica’s mom let’s her jump off bridges too!…or something like that”. Clearly I was derailing! We arrived at the coffee shop & surprisingly unlike an abducted child who would sprint from the car she cemented her butt to the seat and refused to go in! What the hell?! “Don’t you want a coffee? I’ll even splurge for a fancy drink; get a Frappe Mocha Latte Ohh La La.”  Eye-roll, eye-roll, eye-roll…and looked the other way out the window.  Since when did a fancy coffee drink go from a “treat” status to torture?  “We are going IN! Even if we just sit and stare at each other! GET. OUT. OF. THE. CAR!”  And… at a snails speed she made her way out of the car and into the coffee house where she refused anything to eat or drink.  I ordered a tea and we sat. “So what was the deal this morning? Are you okay? Did something happen at school?” I asked in my kindest most caring voice. Nothing! “This morning you were crying, are you okay?” I warmly expressed as I leaned closer to her. And as if my body language could kill, she pushed her chair away from me and sat in disgust. I was half tempted to ask if she was waiting for her lawyer…she’s good. We sat in silence for 15 minutes then left. So much for our awesome mother/daughter bonding time!

Once in the car I tried my last attempt….”I know life is hard, you were crying this morning…sometimes we feel alone. You told me you were going to share its okay that you didn’t, but please know you’re not alone, I’m here”. She replied…”you’re not listening, that’s not even what happened, & AND YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND!” And with that the flood gates opened. I tried everything to stop them! The rest of the way home I carefully watched my speedometer because if I did get pulled over by the cops I feared what would come out of this child’s mouth next.

As I walked inside the house, mascara running, and my son asked, “What’s wrong?” And I replied,   “Nothing”, as I wiped the tears away feeling totally depleted.

I feel like moms of teenage daughters should have a support group…whose with me?

He just doesn’t make me Happy Anymore

You should leave because you deserve someone who makes you happy! We’ve all heard this phrase before, often well intended & coming from a place of concern, but is it really the best advice? We’re delving into the topic of happiness today click on link to hear our take. Who is ultimately responsible for your happiness? Does responsibility fall on your spouse? Is it possible to be happy all the time? If we allow our feelings & emotions to run the show 24/7 are we the equivalent of an adolescent?
