Pigeon Forge & Gatlinburg on a Budget

Road Trip! Time to make those epic family memories with the kiddos! But you can’t even take the family out to eat without dropping some serious coin. How are you supposed to travel for the weekend/week!?   Simple, just follow these basic guidelines;

  • Research the best places to stay & get the best deal! Search….travago.com, expedia.com, kayak.com, Airbnb.com, pigionforgejellystone.com (they have  Glamping tents, ladies…and Yogi Bear will personally deliver cookies & milk to your camp site for a small fee), etc. some are as low as $44 a night, depending on day. Always read the fine print & look out for added fees. When possible book at places that offer FREE breakfast & a pool…going out to eat for breakfast can get pricey (save $20+ a day with free breakfast) and pools are the BEST when traveling with kids. Lastly, EBATES, baby! (10% cash back on bookings on their hotels, just FYI)Tenn33
  • Only visit places you don’t have at home (For example- we have Cedar Point at home, thus we opted not to go to Dollywood)
  • Pack Food -Toss whatever you have in your fridge in a cooler. Then, only purchase what you need. (PB & J sandwiches, veggies, & fruit were our go-to…kids literally had that for lunch every day, lol! Buying 3 loaves of bread, a jar of PB, jelly, veggies and fruit was actually cheaper than taking the entire family to McDonalds just once for a meal).Tenn31
  • Seek the free and splurge on three (As a family, decide on 3 things you will splurge on during your trip and then seek out all free things to do for the remainder of the trip). We found a lot of fun FREE things to do…..

Free Things to do in Gatlinburg & Pigeon Forge, TN

Enter the Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Website: https://www.nps.gov/grsm/index.htm

That’s right; entry into the park is FREE!!

Sugarlands Visitor Center

Tenn32

Website: https://www.nps.gov/grsm/planyourvisit/visitorcenters.htm#CP_JUMP_48430

This was our first stop and was extremely helpful! The park is huge, so a map is a must and it is often busy, so do inquire with a ranger and heed their recommendations. There is also a free 20-minute orientation motion picture that provides an in-depth look at the Smokies and the enormous diversity of plant and animal life in the Park. Natural history exhibits include mounted specimens of park animals in recreations of their habitats and reproductions of journals kept by the first park naturalists are also on display. (Ranger talks and slide shows are presented daily from spring through fall). All FREE!

Newfound Gap Road

This is perfect for little travelers…toddlers, preschoolers, etc. The 33-mile drive from Gatlinburg to Cherokee North Carolina along Newfound Gap Road (US 441) is the only route that completely traverses the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. And has awesome pic opportunities along the way.Tenn30

Rockefeller Memorial (Newfound Gap Road)

Website: https://www.pigeonforge.com/great-smoky-mountains-national-park/rockefeller-monument/

Rockefeller Memorial, which lies half in Tennessee and half in North Carolina.Tenn26 It memorializes the support and $5 million donated by the Rockefeller family to help establish the Park, which was dedicated here by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1940.Tenn27

Clingman’s Dome (Newfound Gap Road)

Tenn25

Website: https://www.nps.gov/grsm/planyourvisit/clingmansdome.htm

At 6,643 feet, Clingmans Dome is the highest point in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Tenn21It is the highest point in Tennessee, and the third highest mountain east of the Mississippi. Only Mt. Mitchell (6,684 feet) and Mt. Craig (6,647), both located in Mt. Mitchell State Park in western North Carolina, rise higher. The observation tower on the summit of Clingmans Dome offers spectacular 360° views of the Smokies and beyond for visitors willing to climb the steep half-mile walk to the tower at the top.

Tenn22

It’s seven miles to the end of Clingmans Dome Road and there are scenic pullouts with endless views of ridges and valleys along the way. The road ends in a large parking area from which a 0.5 mile trail leads to the summit. The trail is paved but steep, and leads to an observation tower on top.

Ole Smoky Candy Kitchen

Tenn10

Tenn16

Website: https://www.olesmokycandykitchen.com/

This can be a fun free experience, but only if you have the willpower. Ole Smoky Candy Kitchen is an adorable candy shop that was founded in 1950 by Dave and Peggy Dych. The kiddos enjoyed watching the candy be made in full view. Tenn15Candy makers are dressed in white uniforms, and they stirred large copper kettles while feeding taffy into hypnotic machines. This drew quit a crowd. And the best part, free SAMPLES!! That fresh taffy will have you longing for more, this is where that willpower comes into play, you might find yourself purchasing just one box, or three, lol!Tenn14

Photo Ops (Hollywood Wax Museum & other various stops)

Tenn2

As you enter Pigeon Forge & Gatlinburg your mind is blown away by the amount of things there are to do and see, there’s the Hollywood Wax Museum, Ripley’s Believe it or Not, Titanic Museum, etc. Gatlin5

Gatlin3

And each comes with a hefty admission price. For example, our youngest showed an interest in Hollywood Wax Museum so we inquired about the cost, it would cost us $85 for the family ($23 for adults and $13 for kids). Tenn1So we made a deal, we would stop in the gift store and she could buy something with her money if she wished (kids have money from b-day & helping out around the house, beyond their chores) and we could get a pic. Sold, she loved the idea and to this day it’s her favorite pic. So don’t be afraid to just get a pic, they are FREE.

Our Splurges

Dolly Parton’s Stampede Dinner Attraction

Website: https://dpstampede.com/

Tenn8This was such a magnificent and fun family experience! Kiddos loved the fact that there was no utensils during the meal…everything was finger food! Lol! Dolly Parton’s Stampede dinner show has thirty-two magnificent horses & a cast of top-notch riders to entertain you while you enjoy your meal. Tenn4There was daring feats of trick riding and competition, princesses, lots of live animals, a pitting North against South in a friendly and fun rivalry, and more. Tenn5The evening was full of music, dancing, special effects and family friendly comedy. The Patriotic Grand Finale was beautiful with flying Doves of Peace, luminous costumes and fireworks, reminding you of the pride and spirit of America. This was our splurge at almost $200 once everything was said and done (we did buy the souvenir mugs for each of the kids in the beginning, did not buy the pics below) $45 for adults and $25 for kids. But when you are having PB & J sandwiches every day for lunch and free breakfast at the hotel the money saved can go to your “splurge” experience.  Tenn7

This was one my husband wanted to do and I must admit it did end up being a lot of fun. When was the last time your entire family dressed up and had a portrait taken? This didn’t take too long and wasn’t too expensive ($35 for one, second was half off…so ya know we had to get two, lol!).

Make-A-Wish BIG Wish Gala & World Wish Day

There wasn’t a dry eye in the house!! My husband and I attended the Big Wish Gala last Friday and let me tell you, it was an emotionally charged, educational, and fun experience. There was a silent action, open bar, delicious food, live auction, amazing speakers, oh, & a puppy…it checked all my boxes!

And the speakers, omg! When Karen, a Wish Mom spoke about her daughter, her daughter’s illness, & what an amazing gift her daughter’s wish was…this momma’s heart and purse strings were tugged & the flood gates opened. It was such a raw experience; the evening took me to a place I hadn’t anticipated. Are you familiar with Make-a-Wish? Did you know that not all kids wish for luxury vacations? Did you know that granting a wish for a child renews hope & is an integral part of their treatment…it helps them fight their illness?( Stats- ◦89% of medical professionals say that the wish experience influences wish kids’ physical health. (Results from national wish impact study) And ◦99% of parents reported that the wish experience gave their children increased feelings of happiness and 96% said that the wish experience strengthened their families.) Sadly, only one out of two wishes gets granted! But not at the Gala, at the BIG Wish Gala $180,000 was raised & 22 life changing wishes will be granted for local Toledo kids!!! Thank you, Toledo!!

But there are still more kids waiting for their wish, we need you! As the old saying goes: We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give! There is a new feature event coming up, click on the clip to see the trailer…

World Wish Day is April 29th please consider donating, volunteering, and checking out all the numerous ways you and your family can get involved and help other families in our community.

Make-A-Wish 2018 Toledo BIG Wish® Gala!

As the old saying goes: We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.

Three big principles of any solid financial plan are to save, spend and give. Most people forget about the giving part, though, because they think mostly about saving and spending.

But giving is just as important. It softens the heart of the giver and frees their soul from dependence on money. You’ll never walk away from giving feeling bad! (Source)

Those wise words from the money guru himself, Dave Ramsey, resonate in my mind as I eagerly raid my closet for something to wear to the upcoming Make-A-Wish 2018 Toledo BIG Wish® Gala!

Bigwishgala3

Make-a-Wish Foundation is a household name, but how much do we really know about it?

The heartfelt experience of local wish kids coupled with ongoing independent research from a pediatric specialist illustrating the impact of wishes on kids battling critical illnesses will be the highlights of the 2018 Make-A-Wish® Ohio Kentucky & Indiana BIG Wish® Gala, presented by RMF Nooter, to be held on Friday, April 13 at the Hilton Garden Inn. An event fundraising goal of $150,000 has been set to help make wishes come true for at least 18 local kids battling critical illnesses in Northwest Ohio.

An event fundraising goal of $150,000 has been set to help make wishes come true for at least 18 local kids battling critical illnesses in Northwest Ohio.

Dr. Anup Patel, Section Chief of Pediatric Neurology and Director of the Complex Epilepsy Clinic at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, was inspired to conduct an academic research study of the physical and financial outcomes of a wish journey on eligible kids after observing firsthand the impact of a wish on patients. Preliminary observations of his study will be conveyed during the BIG Wish Gala. (Pics from 2017 BIG Wish Gala)

bigwishgala

Currently, only one out of every two eligible kids experience a wish.

One of the reasons Dr. Patel has since joined the Make-A-Wish America Advisory Board is to increase medical provider awareness of the benefits of a granted wish on eligible kids. Currently, only one out of every two eligible kids experience a wish. During the Gala, wish kid Hannah, of Northwood, Ohio, and her mom will speak about how Hannah’s treatment journey inspired her to wish to be a medical student. She ultimately hopes to become a pediatrician.

The early findings of Dr. Patel’s study will be highlighted at the event, with the full results to be published later in 2018. Currently, there are nearly 123 medically eligible wish kids in Northwest Ohio.

In addition to hearing the inspiring stories from kids and families whose lives have been changed by a granted wish, two local professionals will be honored by Make-A-Wish:

  • Volunteer of the Year – Linda Chaney. Volunteering to support multiple wishes at a time, Linda truly believes in the Make-A-Wish and does everything she can to make sure all of her wish kids have an incredible wish journey.
  • Medical Professional of the Year – Sue Hoover, ProMedica. Sue refers every child that is eligible to Make-A-Wish; she’s referred over 100 children during her time at ProMedica.

Following racing, new in 2018 across all Monster Jam events, fans in every city will have the chance to vote for the truck winner in the freestyle competition by real-time, in-arena fan voting on their smartphones. Oak Openings Metropark, a wonder to behold!

Trip Advisor has it listed as #8 or 80 things to do in Toledo and I could not agree more! It is home to “the Spot” which has earned quite a reputation amongst Insta-grammers from all over Ohio as well as photographers from Michigan, Washington, D.C., New York, New Jersey, Virginia, Minnesota, California, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.  With its sand dunes, bike trails, Tornado Alley, Mallard Lake, campgrounds, Horse trails, picnic areas, etc. it’s the Disney World of Metroparks with endless beauty everywhere you turn just waiting to be explored!

Rasa, The Date Night Game Changer

You booked the babysitter weeks ago; you’ve got on that pretty dress, even did your makeup, and yet, still haven’t decided where you’re going. Classic Date Night dilemma! So you’ll debate where to go for twenty minutes, each vetoing the other’s ideas, and eventually arrive at the “usual” spot. Date nights becoming a bit too predictable? Sick of the “usual” spot!? Want to venture off the restaurant chain path? Go somewhere more exotic? Want to feel like you’ve gone on a mini vacation? Then Rasa is the Date Night game changer you’ve been looking for!

I had the pleasure of dining at Rasa for my birthday and it was an experience like none other. From the moment you enter Rasa you can feel your blood pressure lowering, the atmosphere is like nothing else in the city. It’s like, if a high end farm-to-table establishment in a big city and a spa had a baby, it would be Rasa! Lol! Honestly, I fell in love with the atmosphere first and then the food. And the food, omg, it is REAL food, none of that frozen crap reheated or fried. But I’m getting ahead of myself. After all, Date Nights are meant to be savored!

First things first, beverages! Rasa takes beverage to a whole new level & encourages those dining to broaden their beverage palette to that beyond just Coke or Pepsi products. Sparkling water, seasonal Kombucha, Turmeric Horchata, Lemongrass Fresca, etc. in addition to the wine, beer, & amazing cocktail menu.

And the food, oh my gosh, it is seasonal, fresh, & prepared to perfection!! Or at least the 3 meals I sampled were, yep, I’m one of “those” people, I want to try it all! Lol! What I really appreciate is the fact that food, along with beverages, & some of the décor are local. The conscious community connection with local businesses & farms adds a layer of comfort to the meal.

I will warn you, it is hard to leave the little magical oasis that is Rasa and walk back into reality. But leave you must, even though the closing time is flexible for dinner they frown upon bringing in your sleeping bag. But the good news is Rasa isn’t just limited to Dinner, there is also a Brunch & Lunch menu! So call up the girls, for a ladies day brunch!
