Ladies Night Out: Ugly Dress Party

“They’re all going to laugh at you…they’re all going to laugh at you!” that scene from the 1976 American supernatural horror film, Carrie, suddenly popped into my mind. Maybe this is a bad idea!? What if I’m the only one who shows up? What if everyone shows, but, I’m the only one dressed like a weirdo? Maybe we shouldn’t meet in public? Those were the many thoughts racing through my head just moments before I hit the create button on the event, Ugly Dress Party!

INVITATION READ….

Moms Night Out: Ugly Dress Party

Are you prepared to laugh your asses off ladies? You know that ugly dress you keep shoved in the back of your closet and you don’t know why you didn’t donate it years ago? This is why! So you can take it out for one more night on the town.

How it Works:

Come dressed not to impress! Feel free to wear one of those “you can totally wear this again” bridesmaid dresses, old prom dress, etc. Don’t have an ugly dress? Make a dress ugly (add weird layers or accessories), hit up eBay (80s prom dresses) or thrift store, you can find them for cheap “shocker”, lol! Be sure to really bring it….hair accessories, shoes, etc. because there is a title on the line, Queen of the Ugly Dress Award! Yep, there will be prizes!!

Where: The Heights, 444 N Summit St. Toledo, OH 43604

When: January 18, 2018 @ 6:30pm

We will enjoy drinks, dinner, & fabulous conversation, so be sure to budget your money & time accordingly.

Call up that sitter, remove the mothballs from that dress, & be prepared to bring it!

Neale Donald Walsch said, “Life begins at the end of your comfort zone”, and boy was he right! Life hasn’t felt that exhilarating in a long time! The Ugly Dress party was a success. I will admit, it did feel a little strange walking into a public restaurant wearing what we were, but I think we added a bit of liveliness to the atmosphere and maybe even helped some tables with a conversation starter, lol!

uglydressparty1

All the ladies brought it, so much so that it was hard to decide on a Queen of the Ugly Dress award so we had some help from the wait staff. And while yours truly was awarded the “most confused outfit award”, we had another mom who really committed head to toe to the event; we are talking hair and all!

If you are looking for something fun, outside the box, end of your comfort zone type of experience than hosting a Ladies Night Out: Ugly Dress Party will not disappoint! Feel free to copy the invitation above and send it out to all your girlfriends. Do remember to change the date and if you feel uncomfortable making a spectacle of yourself in public you could always host the party at someone’s house…though, I know our group would rather make a spectacle of themselves in public than have to clean their house for a party, it all boils down to priorities, lol!

OVO Cirque du Soleil, a performance unlike any other!

“How can a show that doesn’t have any “real” spoken words be so awesome?” was the observation made by my husband on the drive home from the most amazing performance ever, OVO Cirque du Soleil.  I almost corrected him, but then I took a moment to reflect on the show and he was totally right! Oh my gosh…there were no real, comprehendible words spoken during the entire performance. And yet, I understood and followed the show effortlessly, and what’s more, so did my husband and kids, how was that possible?  The emotion, tone, visuals, music, and amazing performers provided a cohesive experience that transcended verbal language and spoke directly to the soul.

The fluid movement of the performers, the visual effects that literally pulled the audience in with movement, paired with the synchronized lights and sound effects provided such a lifelike experience, for a moment I had to remind myself that those performers were not real insects. However, our 6 year old was totally immersed in the imaginary, so much so that she even yelled out a couple times to the performers in excitement.

And as I looked down the aisle at my tween, 9 year old, & husband each with their eyes opened wide and faces lit up in awe I realized that OVO Cirque du Soleil managed to do something that no other show or performance we have attended as a family has ever done, it fully absorbed each of our attention and that is no easy task!  The narrative of the insects and the mysterious egg pulled us in but it was the agility, fluidity, and beauty illustrated by the acrobats, gymnasts, and performers that kept us on the edge of our seats.

It was so exceptional that a standing ovation didn’t seem qualitative to such an outstanding performance but alas, it was all we had….so we stood and frantically clapped in utter delight. Though I must admit a part of me was a little sad that it was over. The experience was not just beautiful and awe inspiring but it was darn right relaxing and as a mom I appreciate any experience that can arouse a peaceful feeling within. Thankfully there is a soundtrack so I can try to channel that relaxing experience on otherwise crazy and chaotic days.

This is one performance you don’t want to pass up; it literally captivates ALL audience members. So grab your tickets today and be prepared to experience one of the most impressive, relaxing, captivating, awe inspiring performances.

About the show

OVO, meaning “egg” in Portuguese, is a headlong rush into a colorful ecosystem teeming with life, where insects work, eat, crawl, flutter, play, fight and look for love in a non-stop riot of energy and movement.

When a mysterious egg appears in their midst, the insects are awestruck and intensely curious about this iconic object that represents the enigma and cycles of their lives. It is love at first sight when a gawky, quirky insect arrives in this bustling community and a fabulous ladybug catches his eye – and the feeling is mutual.

The cast of OVO is comprised of 50 performing artists from 12 countries specializing in many acrobatic acts. One highlight of OVO is the stunning Flying Act in which a group of scarabs soar high above the stage, from both edges to the middle landing on a platform.

5 moms & NO Kids for 24 Hours!

Every generation has that “boy band” that all the adolescent girls swoon over.   In 1950 it was, The Clovers, Ames Brothers, Drifters, Four Freshmen, ect.  1960/70, The Beatles, The Jackson 5, The Monkees, The Osmonds, etc.  1980s it was New Edition and New Kids on the Block, 1990s welcomed, Boyz II Men, All-4-One, Backstreet Boys, ‘NSync,  98 Degree, etc.  And the legacy continues with One Direction & Big Time Rush.  Though I enjoy and appreciate the talent found in all these boy bands my adolescent heart belongs exclusively to New Kids on the Block. I can recall a many lunchroom conversations in 5th grade that were dedicated to New Kids on the Block. We would discuss who was the cutest (Jordon & Joey were always the top 2, mind you, my favorite was always Donnie), their latest song, dance moves, etc.  So, when a friend contacted me back in January about seeing NKOTB in concert in Columbus on June 16th that little adolescent girl inside me was jumping up and down screaming YES!!!

A LONG winter and wet Spring later and the day has finally arrived! After much planning, between the 5 moms who attended the concert we have 13 kiddos who needed to have babysitting arrangements made, bags needed to be packed, pets watched, etc. The money, time, planning, etc. was ALL worth it for 24 hours KID FREE with my BFFs to see not only NKOTB but also, Nelly & TLC!!! Eeee!! It was amazing!

Hour 1……

Our first stop was Starbucks for a caffeine fix….there would be no going to bed on a kid free night!!!

 NKOTB 004

Hour 3….We arrived at the Sheraton Suites where we busted into our suitcases, changed our clothes, added jewelry, freshened makeup, and ditched the mom persona and manage to become reacquainted with our pre-momma selves!! There we are, our light-hearted, fun-loving, kid free selves!! Looking good ladies!! Lookout Columbus here we come!!

 NKOTB 015GALS

Hour 5….Before we headed to the concert we hit a local famous eatery, The Thurman Café! It was featured on the Food Network’s, Man vs. Food for its immense, impossible to eat, grandiose Thurmanator Burger! FYI- the burger won!

NKOTB 021

It is such a cool burger joint. While we waited for our table we jammed out to some NKOTB tunes. We were totally Hangin Tough. Haha!

NKOTB 026GALS

I had to get a pic of this….I can’t remember the last time I saw cigarettes in a vending machine!

NKOTB 028

The atmosphere was fun and the décor was, well, full of singles signed by patrons forever commemorating their moment in history. I LOVE it! Genius!

NKOTB 037

To forever commemorate the event we all signed a dollar and taped that sucker to the wall. So, maybe I will never get a Star on Hollywood Walk of Fame but at least I can say I have a dollar on The Thurman Café wall!!

NKOTB 035

Here is a pick of a burger that is a “baby” in comparison to the Thurmanator!

NKOTB 039

Hour 7….And finally, the moment we had been waiting months, years, and decades for, the NKOTB concert!!! Nelly & TLC opened for them and they were amazing!! The crowd was so much fun; everyone was up on their feet, dancing and singing. The majority of the peeps in attendances were female age 25-50, allowing their inner teenage self out for a few hours; some of those ladies were getting down. Lol!

 NKOTB 080

As NKOTB made their grand appearance I have to admit my heart was beating a bit faster in anticipation.

 NKOTB 083

And then they started singing….and for a brief moment I thought, thank goodness my 9 year old self no longer selects the music I listen to because her taste is questionable. But then they sang some of their old school classics like, Step by Step, Hangin Tough, Please don’t go Girl, etc. and I could practically feel my braces on my teeth again. Haha! Donnie had a blast with us OSU fans!! There was a lot of OH-IO and buckeye paraphernalia that he wore, it was awesome!!

NKOTB 096

NKOTB 086

I honestly don’t know if it was the music, the nostalgic effect the music brought on, the peeps I was with, or a combination of all three that made it a night to remember. I had the best time!!

Hours 11-24 shall remain in our memory….what happens in Columbus stays in Columbus. Truth be told, around 1:30am we crashed, we were so tired. You can take the mom away from the kids but you can’t remove the exhaustion of having kids from the mom. LOL!

Huge thank you and shout out to all you amazing peeps who made this evening possible, including the 4 amazing ladies who made it a night to remember, my magnificent parents for watching the kiddos, and my hubby for encouraging me to go see my adolescent heartthrob…now that’s a secure man! Lol! And a special thank you to you for allowing me to share this memory with you….who was your adolescent crush?  Were you a NKOTB fan? If so, who was your favorite?

The Key to being a Great Mom!

Based on the title of this post you are more than likely expecting me to discuss the importance of patience, love, tenderness, not raising your voice, extra hugs and kisses, etc. While all those are very important components they are not the key to being a great mom. The key to being a great mom is to not be one from time-to-time. What! Ludacris! Crazy, right!? Wrong! You want to know what’s crazy, weeping while in the fetal position at 9pm knowing you have to get up and do it all over again in the morning. True story!

Spoiler alert! Sometimes being mom isn’t glamorous (I apologize to all the first time moms whose dreams I might have just shattered). In fact at times I feel like a hybrid of a customer service representative and wall fixture. Don’t get me wrong, motherhood has its perks. I have achieved some mad skills like being able to know where everything is located, making booboos all better, and don’t even get me started on all the ways I can multitask…we are talking cleaning a toilet, bathing one child (not in the toilet…just thought clarification was in order), helping another with homework, all while making a grocery list in my head. Let’s see Dad try that!!

And speaking of Dad, why is it that there is no such thing as daddy guilt? Talk about an oxymoron, right! But mommy guilt, now that is very much real. And that beast often attacks when you least expect. Like when you have exceeded your complaint quota for the day and you’re in the middle of multitasking your multitasking and BAM! You realized you promised your child you would read a book that you never got around to reading. Mommy guilt tells you that you are clearly a horrible mother who breaks promises to her children. Consuming this motherhood cocktail has consequences; it results with your husband finding you weeping while in the fetal position at 9pm.

The good news is there is help. So, how do you cure this ailment? Get out! Have coffee with a friend. Do something, anything without the children. Organize a Moms Night Out. It is so vital that you have time away to rejuvenate and refresh, remember who you are as a person. Your children deserve a mother who isn’t physically and emotionally drained (FYI, this doesn’t mean that they will be 100% on board with you leaving, it might be a little difficult leaving the house so start your goodbyes a ½ hour early and brace yourself for a few tears…from the children too). Motherhood is such an amazing blessing and it is important that we don’t lose sight of that, that we cherish this treasure.

monsnight 008

I know I am cherishing motherhood today after having enjoyed a Moms Night Out last night. I came home feeling refreshed, rejuvenated, and today I felt like I was in pure mommy bliss. I took the kiddos to the park, we baked cookies, giggled over the dinner table conversation, and I even extended bedtime so we could hang out a little longer (pre-Moms Night Out I was counting down the minutes till bedtime). Just as Date Night is vital to your relationship Moms Night Out is vital in order to be a great mom!

When was the last time you had a Moms Night Out?
